At Mercedes AMG High Performance Powertrains, our highly talented and ambitious team are
responsible for the design, manufacture, testing and racing of Formula 1 Power Units enjoying
enormous success with our partner team Mercedes AMG F1 and customer teams: Aston Martin,
Williams, and McLaren. Additionally, we have our Advanced Technology team who transfer F1
technologies and know-how into high performance automotive projects and products such as
the revolutionary Mercedes AMG One and the Mercedes-Benz Vision EQXX.
Formula 1
Our mission is to win every Formula 1 World Championship and have zero race weekend failures.
We are driven by realising ambitious, innovative technologies that both increase thermal
efficiency and on-track performance (resulting in faster qualifying and race lap times).
Within the development for our Formula 1 Power unit, from concept to racing, we need a depth
of expertise in both hardware and software across all elements of our Formula 1 hybrid Power
Unit:
- Internal Combustion Engines
- Turbochargers
- High Speed, High Power Electric Machines (MGUH, MGUK)
- Power Electronics
- Energy Storage Systems
Throughout our development iterations we continually focus on our core principles:
- Speed and flexibility
- Technical excellence
- Quality
Overview of HPP “Value Chain”
We aim to maximise our rate of learning by achieving as many ‘Right-First-Time’ development
iterations as possible within a given time frame.
To achieve our mission, we strive to ensure our Power Units incorporate the best engineering
solutions, having been thoroughly proven out on our test facilities in Brixworth before being
deployed at the racetrack.
Advanced Technology
Our Advanced Technology team are operating at the forefront of technology, being empowered to push the boundaries of engineering, thriving, and growing constantly. HPP work closely with the Mercedes-Benz team in Stuttgart with the mission to drive innovations that will help define the future for Mercedes-Benz electrification, exemplifying motorsport ambition and pace. This team has most recently been responsible for the hardware and software for the Battery, Battery Management System and Power Electronics for the ground-breaking Vision EQXX, and in production process of the hugely ambitious AMG One Hypercar. With a healthy pipeline of future projects under discussion, this is a career area worth keeping your eye on.
AMG One
The first street legal Hypercar with F1 Technology made history before it was even built, and a core group of Engineers at HPP, partnered with Mercedes-AMG, helped make it happen. This project, 6 years in the making, was for sure a milestone at the pinnacle of engineering technology. A plug-in hybrid, 1.6 litre V6 turbo petrol engine, 1063hp system performance, a directly cooled 800-volt battery (developed exclusively by our HPP team), and an acceleration of 0-200km/h in 7.0 seconds, there has never been anything like it.
Vision EQXX
The blueprint for the future of efficiency, this project aimed to push all boundaries of electric range and efficiency and produce an all-electric vehicle capable of achieving a minimum real-world drive of 1000km on a single battery charge and energy consumption less than 10 kWh/100km. The partnership built between Stuttgart and our own HPP Advanced Technologies team enabled this idea to be turned into reality. Whilst this was a technology programme for Mercedes-Benz, we are expecting to see innovations and learnings quickly make their way into series production cars.
